Holidaymakers jetting off abroad this year should double check their suitcases before flying as airlines including easyJet and Jet2 have strict rules when it comes to hand luggage.
Each airline has its own allowances when it comes to carry-on luggage, so it’s always worth checking the baggage limits specified on your booking before you pack as breaking the rules could result in an unexpected charge at the airport of up to £48, depending on who you’re flying with.
Jet2 and easyJet’s hand luggage policies make specific mention of suitcases with wheels and bags that don’t comply will have to be checked into the hold at an additional fee.

EasyJet’s baggage rules allow all travellers to bring a small cabin bag of up to 45 x 36 x 20cm on board with them as standard – like the Chelsea Bag from luxury suitcase brand Antler which is down from £140 to £84 in the sale – while Jet2’s limit is slightly larger at 56 x 45 x 25cm, such as the Clifton Cabin Bag from Antler, which is £66 off.
Both airlines clearly state that these measurements must include any wheels and handles, so passengers using wheeled cases will get slightly less packing room and should ensure that their bags are the right size.
Jet2’s rules state: “You may carry on board one piece of hand luggage free of charge, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg and is no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including any wheels and handles. If your hand luggage weighs more or is larger than this, it will need to be checked into the aircraft hold, and you may have to pay an additional charge.”
Passengers who fly with Jet2 can also bring a small personal item on board such as a handbag or laptop bag but it must fit under the seat in front. Meanwhile, easyJet’s rules say: “Everyone can bring one small cabin bag per person on board for free. It can be a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including any handles and wheels) and needs to be kept under the seat in front of you. That should be enough to bring all the essentials for your journey or for a short trip.
“Your bag can weigh up to 15kg, but we do ask that you’re able to lift and carry it yourself. If you’d also like to bring a large cabin bag on board (max. 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including any handles and wheels), you have the option to book a large cabin bag for your flight. Every customer who books a large cabin bag can also enjoy the benefit of speedy boarding.”
Jet2 passengers who bring an oversized bag to the airport can be charged £12 per extra kg, while easyJet charges an Airport Bag Fee of £48 for any excess luggage brought to the departure gate.
